Yoga is about more than just the poses; it's a transformative journey into self. The more we practice, the closer we come to learning how to harness and direct our prana - the vital life force that we drink in on the breath. But why is energy so important in our practice? And how does it connect to manipura chakra, the vibrant yellow energy center spinning in our solar plexus?
This month, we're exploring the idea of energy in our classes, so I wanted to share a little about the importance of managing our energy in yoga, how it relates to manipura
and how this understanding can lead us to greater self-awareness and empowerment.
Understanding energy in yoga practice
Energy, or prana, is the essential life force that flows through our bodies. Each inhale brings in energy, while each exhale releases tension, allowing us to transform physically and spiritually. In yoga, we learn to cultivate and control this energy, creating a powerful link between body, mind, and spirit.
As we move through asanas, we listen to our bodies, noticing how our energy fluctuates. For instance, on some days, we might feel a surge of vitality, while on others, we may feel drained. When we tune into these sensations, we gain valuable insights into our overall wellbeing.
This awareness encourages us to go beyond just performing poses. We engage fully with the art of breathing and intention, deepening our experience. Each pose becomes an opportunity to align our energy with our inner purpose. So it's important to take time after poses to connect to this inner awareness.
The role of agni in yoga
In yogic philosophy, Agni represents our inner fire and is linked to digestion, transformation, and vitality. Just as fire transforms raw materials into nourishing food, our inner fire processes experiences, emotions, and energies.
In our yoga practice, nurturing agni is key to grounding our energy. Techniques such as breathwork (pranayama) can ignite our inner fire and enhance focus. For example, Kapalabhati breathing not only energizes the solar plexus but has been shown to improve respiratory function by up to 40%.
Practices that stoke our inner fire instil enthusiasm and motivation. As yoga students, we channel this energy on and off the mat, approaching challenges with resilience.
Manipura chakra

Manipura Chakra, or the solar plexus chakra, is located near the diaphragm and governs personal power, self-esteem, and willpower. When balanced, we project confidence and assertiveness, moving toward our goals with clarity.
Physically, manipura chakra affects our digestive system, metabolism, and energy levels. An imbalance can result in symptoms such as low self-esteem, lethargy, and digestive issues. According to a survey, nearly 67% of individuals with emotional stress also report digestive concerns, highlighting how closely our energy levels are tied to emotional health.
To activate and align this chakra, we can delve deeper into our yoga practice. Poses such as Boat Pose and Warrior III strengthen the core and cultivate confidence, allowing us to harness our personal power effectively. Crystals also hold their own vital energies and can be used to revitalise their corresponding chakras. Hence crystals such as citrine, tiger's eye, pyrite and yellow calcite will all work well with manipura (more on this in a separate post!).
How to control and harness energy for balance
Controlling energy is essential for achieving balance in our yoga practice, but also in our daily lives. Here are some effective strategies to cultivate and direct your energy:
Breath awareness
Mindful breathing helps regulate energy levels. Focus on your breath, especially during challenging poses. Inhale deeply to draw energy and maintain focus.
Visualisation
Use visualization to connect with manipura. Imagine a glowing golden light in your solar plexus that brightens with each breath, empowering your sense of purpose.
Strength-building asanas
Incorporate poses that build core strength to stimulate Manipura Chakra (asanas such as boat pose, plank, bow and cobra). Such movements foster confidence and create stability.
Establish a routine
Consistency in your practice cultivates energy over time. Whether through asana, meditation, or breathwork, find a routine that resonates with you and stick to it.
Embracing Your Journey
Every moment on your mat is an opportunity to ignite your inner fire. By understanding and controlling your energy, you open doors to self-discovery and transformation. As we continue this journey together, remember the radiant energy within you and celebrate the spark of your being.
